Their replies are getting shorter — how do I read that?
The messages that used to run long and open now come back short and functional. It is one of the most noticeable changes in a conversation, and one of the easiest to over-read from a single reply.
Length is a condition worth watching precisely because it shifts gradually. One short reply is noise; a steady move from open-ended to closed over a week is a pattern. The difference is only visible across the whole thread, which is exactly where a single anxious reread cannot see.
Reply length also travels with pace and initiation. Shorter and slower and mostly you starting things is a clearer condition than shorter alone. Described together, plainly, they tend to answer the question you actually have without any need to guess at motive.
This will not tell you the reason a conversation changed shape, and it does not need to. Seeing the change described clearly is usually enough to decide whether to match the new pace, name it, or step back.
What to notice
- Is the shift gradual across the week, or a single short reply?
- Are shorter messages arriving slower too, or at the same pace?
- Who is starting most of the recent exchanges?
- Are the replies closed, or still leaving something open to respond to?
What this does and does not do
It does not decide what a shorter reply says about how someone feels. It describes the change in the conversation you already have — length, pace, who opens it — and stops there, which is the honest place to stop.
